Governor’s son arrested for DUI

On Behalf of | May 6, 2015 | Drunk Driving

The 24-year-old son of Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in the early morning hours of May 1. According to police, the incident occurred in Columbia near the intersection of Broadway and Second Street.

Authorities said officers initially pulled over the defendant’s vehicle for a red light violation just before midnight on April 30. Officers said the defendant smelled like alcohol, and he was subjected to a field sobriety test. He was arrested at approximately 12:08 a.m.

In September 2011, the defendant was also cited for marijuana possession while attending the University of Missouri. Prosecutors later dropped those charges due to lack of evidence. In a statement released on May 2, the governor expressed his love for his son and asked for privacy as the case moves through the municipal legal system.

Missouri residents facing impaired driving charges could face harsh consequences, including jail time and fines, if they are convicted. In some cases, they could also lose current and future job opportunities. However, those who have been so charged may find it advisable to contact a criminal defense attorney immediately following their arrest. An attorney could review the evidence for any sign police overstepped their authority during the arrest process, which could lead to a dismissal of charges. It may also be possible to dispute the accuracy of blood alcohol content level tests and field sobriety tests, particularly if the defendant’s alleged impairment level was close to the legal limit. Depending on the details of the case, an attorney may advise negotiating with prosecutors for a plea deal that mitigates the most serious charges in exchange for the defendant’s guilty plea to a lesser offense.
