College student charged for alleged drunk driving accident

A St. Louis college student was charged for DWI and assault after an alleged hit-and-run accident that injured two fellow students. Although the accident reportedly took place in late April, the accused Washington University student was just recently detained on July 24. The college senior and former dean's list student was booked on criminal charges and held on a $20,000 bond.

According to police, the pedestrian accident occurred while students were returning from an off-campus dance. The accused driver allegedly collided with a bus before hitting two sophomores as they attempted to walk through a crosswalk. Witnesses at the scene reported noticing that the driver had been speeding before the accident.

As a result of the crash, one of the pedestrians who was hit suffered a liver injury and a broken leg. The other pedestrian suffered from a broken finger and a concussion. It is unclear whether or not the driver was injured in the accident.

A person accused of DWI after an accident with injuries might want to speak with a lawyer about defense strategies. While determining how to plead, it may be important for a defendant to look into the types of sobriety tests they were given at the scene and what the results of those tests were. If the person was not arrested immediately after the crash, it's likely that no breath or blood test was given to them within a reasonable period. In this case, a defendant may argue that no scientific evidence proves that they were intoxicated and that other factors influenced the crash.
