Video shows woman swerving for 30 minutes before crash

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2014 | Felonies

The Missouri Highway Patrol charged a 49-year-old woman with drunk driving after a single-car crash occurred on Dec. 30. According to a witness, the woman’s alleged drunk driving incident was captured in a 30-minute video taken on his passenger’s camera phone. In the video, what is believed to be the woman’s vehicle is seen swerving from one side of the road to the other and nearly colliding with other cars. The woman reportedly has at least one previous DWI on her record.

The incident took place while the accused woman was traveling along Interstate 49 in a Cadillac CTS. According to a witness who had been driving behind her, a 911 dispatcher told him that five other people had previously called to report the same driver. When the woman’s car crashed 45 minutes after the 911 call, reports indicate that police had not yet arrived on the scene.

Following the accident, the woman was taken into police custody before being transferred to a hospital. According to the police report, the woman sustained injuries from the crash that were not life threatening. After leaving the hospital, the woman was not booked but is expected to receive charges for DWI and careless driving.

Although it appears that there is a significant amount of evidence to prove that the woman was swerving on the road, the video footage and eyewitness testimony may not be enough to charge her with DWI. During her trial, the accused woman may be able to present evidence to establish that her erratic driving was not the result of intoxication. It’s possible that a medical condition or exhaustion was the main factor in the accident.
