Do doctors face a higher risk of DWI?

On Behalf of | Jun 1, 2020 | DWI Defense

Being a doctor is one of the most admirable professions. Of course, most people do not enter the medical field in hopes of being seen as a hero. Instead, they want to help people as best as they can. Unfortunately, many doctors face unimaginable stress on the job, which is often difficult to shake.

You may have had dreams of helping patients and feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride when you were able to help someone overcome an illness or injury. Still, you did not have any ill-conceived ideas that you could save everyone or that you would always know what to do. Even with a realistic view, you may not have imagined just how burdensome your job could become.

Turning to alcohol

Many people in the medical field face stress, anxiety, depression and numerous other feelings that can wreak havoc on their daily lives. As a result, it is common for doctors and other medical professionals to turn to alcohol in hopes of having a quick pick-me-up after a particularly stressful day. Some issues that could cause you and others in this profession to feel the urge to drink include the following:

  • High-stress situations and medical emergencies
  • Long hours that leave you feeling drained
  • Feelings of sadness over losing a patient or otherwise not being able to do more for a patient
  • Emotional exhaustion
  • Underlying mental disorders

While it is common for people to turn to alcohol as a way to relax after work, drinking can easily get out of hand for some people. If you look forward to a drink every day or find yourself trying to sneak a drink during work hours, you may have a more serious problem than you once imagined. It is also possible that certain medical professionals could turn to other substances to help them elevate their moods or cover up other issues.

Risks of DWI

Even if you do maintain some self-control and never drink on the job, you may still face certain risks. For example, if you stop at a bar or restaurant for a few drinks and then drive home, it is possible for an officer to stop your vehicle and suspect you of drunk driving. Fortunately, you do have legal rights and options for handling this type of ordeal, and if it happens to you, you may want to contact an experienced Missouri defense attorney.
