Just how quickly can your body reach a .08% blood alcohol level?

When you plan to drink, whether it's a few drinks with friends or drinks at dinner, you need to make plans to get home safely. If you aren't cautious, you could end up driving home while intoxicated.

If the police stop you and accuse you of a DWI, you may find that you're in a world of trouble. You could be asked to take a breath test, and your blood alcohol content could be above .08%.

There is some science that can give you an idea of how long it takes for a person of your height and weight to reach that .08% limit. Keep in mind that you could still face a DWI charge, even if you're under that limit if the police have enough evidence.

Is there any safe amount of alcohol that you can drink prior to driving?

Not really. The body is impacted by alcohol within just minutes of having a drink. Even at lower BAC levels, you may have slower response times and reactions that don't suit the situation.

What are some BAC estimates that you should know?

If you are still interested in knowing estimates for how much alcohol it would take someone of your size and weight to become legally intoxicated, here are a few examples.

  • Someone who is 220 pounds may be able to drink around six drinks in an hour and reach the .08% limit
  • Someone who is 140 pounds can reach the .08% limit faster, getting there with just around four drinks per hour.
  • If a person who is 100 pounds drinks just three drinks per hour, it may be enough to cause their BAC to rise to .08% or higher.

Your blood alcohol content is affected by many factors

Your BAC is affected by many factors, not just your weight. The amount of water you've had to drink, whether you've eaten or not as well as your age and health play a role. Any medications you take can have an impact, as can your gender.

If you have to get home after you drink, you may want to spend the money to catch a cab, or call a friend or loved one for a ride home. No amount of alcohol is worth the trouble a DWI can cause.
