Enjoy Oktoberfest without a DWI

Oktoberfest celebrations have not ended yet! There are still festivities going on around the St. Louis area if you have not been able to attend any yet or want to hit up more. Before you head out, however, do some planning first to ensure you do not end up with a DWI. After all, drinking delicious beer is a cornerstone of any Oktoberfest celebration.

Missouri penalties for a DWI are severe and far-reaching, so take your preparation seriously so you can both enjoy the fun and stay out of legal trouble.

Know your limits

Alcohol does not affect everyone the same way. Certain factors can make you become intoxicated more quickly, such as age, gender, weight and medication. You can slow down your body's alcohol absorption by doing the following:

  • Eating food high in protein and fat beforehand and between drinks
  • Avoiding non-alcoholic carbonated beverages
  • Sipping instead of gulping down drinks
  • Taking breaks between servings

You know your body best, so be aware of your limits and drink accordingly.

Participate in nonalcoholic activities

Although the focus of Oktoberfest is often on the beer, there is plenty to do that does not involve drinking. You can enjoy the parades, cultural performances, concerts contests and family activities at the festival. Splurge on delicious German food, such as sausages and pretzels, instead of on beer. Discover all that Oktoberfest has to offer.

Plan your transportation back home

Unless you have a stone-cold sober friend, do not rely on a designated driver. Even one drink can cause enough impairment for a driver to get into an accident or receive DWI charges in a traffic stop. Call a taxi or lift service instead, or use public transportation if available. If you are too drunk to even get home, check into nearby lodging. Do not make the mistake in thinking you are sober enough to drive. You can get in trouble even with a BAC lower than 0.08 percent.
