5 ways to responsibly host a St. Patrick's Day party

St. Patrick's Day is quickly approaching, and that means more parties. If you are hosting a party, then you should take some precautions to ensure your friends or loved ones do not get arrested for drunk driving. You do not have to be a boring host to effectively prevent arrests, convictions and accidents. Follow these tips to be a responsible host.

1. Assign designated drivers

As you invite people to your party, determine who might make a good designated driver. Depending on the size of the party, you may need multiple drivers. Think of reliable people you know - friends, family members or colleagues. Offer some rewards to designated drivers such as gas money, extra food to take home or a gift card.

2. Coordinate alternate transportation

Sometimes designated drivers bail or end up drinking. In this case, it is always good to have a secondary plan with other methods of transportation. Buses and trains are easy and affordable ways to get everyone home. If public transportation is not available, go for taxis or ridesharing apps. Many companies offer free rides during holidays, so keep an eye out for any free transportation available.

3. Offer non-alcoholic drinks

If the only drinks available at your party are alcoholic, chances are that a lot of people are going to end up drunk. Offering plenty of alternate beverages will reduce the chances of somebody leaving and getting a DWI. Stock up on water, soft drinks and juices.

4. Provide heavy foods

Nothing slows down the absorption of alcohol like foods full of carbs, protein and fat. Providing your guests with plenty of snacks and meal options is a great drunk driving deterrent. Chips, dips, cheeses and eggs are just some examples of smart food to offer.

5. Take the keys

Sometimes the best way to prevent someone from driving drunk is eliminating their ability to do so. If you see a drunk guest who is tempted to drive, do not be afraid to take his or her keys until you determine other viable options. While confrontation may not be ideal, it can be a life or death choice.

Unfortunately, no matter how many steps you take to prevent drunk driving, it can still happen. If you or someone you know gets pulled over for drunk driving, there is still hope. Consulting a criminal defense attorney can help the situation result in a better outcome. If prevention did not work, defense is still always an option.
