'Twas The Night Before Thanksgiving

'Twas the night before Thanksgiving, when all through the town
Many creatures were stirring, at bars near their house;
Police and patrolmen hung out in their lair
In hopes that DWI revenue would soon be theirs;
The patrons were sloshed and grinding their friends,
While visions of junk food danced in their heads

When it comes to our poetry skills, the legacies of Dickinson, Frost and Poe are safe. However, we hope you understand the point we are trying to make about the dangers of making poor choices on Thanksgiving Eve.

The night before Thanksgiving has become synonymous with going out to enjoy a few drinks with friends and family. This makes perfect sense with the number of people who travel home for the holiday combined with the fact that the vast majority of people have Thanksgiving Day off from work.

It's also one of the busiest nights of the year for local law enforcement and the state patrol, as they seek to fill their coffers with the proceeds of DWI arrests.

If you'd like to avoid contributing to their fundraiser, you need to make sound decisions and plan ahead for how you will get home safely.

If a couple drinks with friends turns into too many drinks with friends or you find yourself closing down the bar, you have options other than getting behind the wheel and putting yourself and others at risk. These options include:

  • Taking a taxi
  • Using apps like Uber of Lyft to get a ride
  • Take public transportation
  • Have a designated driver
  • Use your own two feet to get home
  • Call Mom (if you're home for the holiday, why not?)

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on life's blessings, and it is important to share this time of year with friends and family. But it is important to make sure that participating in what's come to be called "Blackout Wednesday" does not leave your bank account and personal reputation in the red.
