Governors, State Representatives, Mayors and Police Chiefs LOVE drunk driving laws.

DWI and DUI laws provide an opportunity to be "tough on crime" with little to no pushback or career risk. After all, who is against the idea of punishing drunk drivers or making our roads safer for motorists and pedestrians?

Unfortunately, over-aggressive enforcement of these laws can turn public safety campaigns into cash grabs that benefit the state and leave citizens to deal with costly financial penalties and a tainted record.

Recently, WalletHub released a study on the strictest and most lenient states when it comes to DUI and DWI enforcement.

Read on to see where Missouri ranks.

The Strict

The five strictest states when it comes to criminal penalties for drunk driving are Arizona, Georgia, Alaska, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.

The Lenient

On the other end of the spectrum, South Dakota, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Vermont are the five most lenient states when it comes to drunk driving penalties. The District of Columbia, if it were a state, would find itself between the Dakotas on the list.

Smack Dab In The Middle

Missouri is tied with New Hampshire and South Carolina, in the middle of the rankings. Don't let this fool you. Even our average penalties for DWI can take thousands of dollars out of your bank account, leave you behind bars, and raise your insurance costs for the rest of your life.

If you find yourself on the wrong side of a DWI arrest, you simply cannot afford to be without an experienced DWI defense lawyer.
