Rapper Wais P pleads guilty to 3rd DWI

Missouri rap fans may be interested in learning that rapper Wais P, who was formerly associated with Jay Z and was signed to Roc-A-Fella Records for a short time, recently pleaded guilty in a New York City courtroom to his third driving while intoxicated offense. The rapper's real name is Malcolm Byer.

Byer likely will be sentenced to the time he already has served. The matter stems from a 2014 DWI arrest, and his attorney said that it took that long to get a reasonable offer from the district attorney.

Byer is scheduled to go to trial on May 16 for allegedly promoting prostitution in a different case. That case resulted from the Bright Lights, Big City crackdown on prostitution and sex trafficking by the New York Police Department in 2015. Law enforcement officers have claimed that Byer's rap music lyrics show that he does promote prostitution, a charge that his lawyer has stated is false. Instead, his attorney says that the types of boastful claims made are simply a part of rap culture.

People who are facing criminal charges may want to get legal help from a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. Doing so early may give the attorney more time to investigate the case and to build a strategy to combat the allegations. The attorney can then take the information that has been gathered in order to attack the state's case. This could include the filing of motions challenging the admissibility of some of the evidence on the basis of it being obtained in a manner that violated the defendant's constitutional rights.
