Citations for DWIs decreasing

People in Missouri may be interested to learn that the number of arrests for DWIs has steadily fallen each year in the city of Springfield. Reportedly, police there claim that they do take DWIs seriously.

According to DWI statistics, there was a drop of 53 percent in DWI arrests in the city from 2005 to 2014. During the same time period, there was also a drop in the number of traffic accidents involving alcohol in Springfield. The police chief stated that the decrease is not due to a lack of enforcement by the police. Instead, he iterated that drunk driving is something for which police will stop and arrest people there.

The police point to the increase of saturation patrols and DWI checkpoints as a deterrent. They also indicated that they believe people are increasingly aware of the dangers of drunk driving, so they may be opting for alternative rides rather than taking risks. Springfield received a COPS grant recently that will allow it to hire additional officers. It also received a MODOT grant so that more checkpoints can be set up. Both should be implemented by 2017.

When a person is charged with DWI in Missouri, the state takes the offense quite seriously. People who are charged may need the help of a criminal defense attorney who understands how to effectively defend against DWI infractions. An attorney may be able to spot problems with how the officer conducted the stop. Legal counsel may also review video to determine if roadside stops and field sobriety tests were conducted appropriately. In some cases, there may be issues with the breathalyzer testing that the attorney can attack. In cases in which it is in a client's best interests to plead guilty, an attorney may be able to secure an agreement with the prosecutor that involves the defendant entering a guilty plea to a lesser offense in exchange for a reduced penalty.
