Man charged for DWI after driving through graveyard

A man in Missouri was accused of driving drunk through a cemetery on Oct. 15. Before the incident, the 21-year-old man had reportedly been consuming alcoholic beverages while he was out celebrating a Kansas City Royals win. Police in Platte City received a report about the accused man at around 9:30 p.m. when a witness spotted him driving erratically through a cemetery.

According to the witness, the man was driving at excessive speeds while jumping hills and maneuvering around headstones. During the incident, one small headstone was reportedly knocked over, and damage to the property could still be seen the following day. Police charged the man for felony property damage and driving while intoxicated.

When interacting with police officers, the accused man reportedly consented to a breath test and agreed to perform multiple field sobriety tests. The man apparently failed to adequately perform the field sobriety tests while the results of the breath test showed that his blood-alcohol content was almost two times the legal limit. He was held in custody on a $7,500 bond, which he had not posted by the next day.

A person in a case like this one may wish to seek a reduction or dismissal of their charges, and a defendant may first begin by speaking with a criminal defense attorney. He or she might assist a defendant in this effort by challenging field sobriety test results due to their possibly unreliable and subjective nature. Additionally, if the person had no criminal record before the drunk driving incident, an attorney might argue for reduced charges or penalties.
