Dina Lohan ordered to pay fines, perform community service

Some St. Louis residents may be interested to learn that 51-year-old Dina Lohan, the mother of actress Lindsay Lohan, has been ordered to pay more than $3,000 in fines after having pleaded guilty to aggravated DWI in April. Her license was suspended thereafter, and she will also be required to perform 100 hours of community service according to the terms the judge in her case decided upon. She will also need to install an ignition interlock device in her vehicle.

Lohan was taken into custody by state police officers in New York after reportedly driving 77 mph in a 55-mph area. Officers say that she registered a .20 percent on blood alcohol tests; the legal limit in both Missouri and New York is .08 percent.

Sources indicate that the plea agreement will allow her to avoid serving jail time for DWI. According to Lohan, she had been fleeing paparazzi reporters when officers initiated the traffic stop.

Before they are able to convict someone of DWI, prosecutors may provide evidence of a driver's intoxication at the time of the incident in question, such as blood test results. In cases such as this where a conviction seems likely, a defense attorney may be able to negotiate an agreement with the prosecution on their client's behalf. Although Dina Lohan pleaded guilty, the sanctions that have been imposed might well be a preferable alternative to imprisonment. If someone finds themselves in a similar situation, their attorney may be able to arrange a plea deal or otherwise seek to minimize the severity of the sentencing.
