Man faces charges of illegally killing wild goose

A 36-year-old Missouri man has confessed to hitting and killing a goose guarding its mate's nest. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an industrial business complex in mid-April. A security recording allegedly depicted the man in his vehicle as he appeared to intentionally strike the Canadian goose. The vehicle then turned around and drove toward the bird a second time.

A short time later, the man reportedly called the Missouri Department of Conservation's Southwest Regional Office regarding the incident once he believed that authorities were looking for him. The license plate of the vehicle had been visible in the recording, which was traced to the man's girlfriend. When spoken to, she claimed ignorance of the incident and noted that her boyfriend often borrowed the car.

He met with an official and confirmed that he was driving the car in question at the time of the incident. The man stated that upon seeing the bird, he accelerated towards it. He did not believe that the goose would remain stationary. When questioned about hitting the goose a second time, he reportedly did not realize he had done so as he attempted to see if the goose was dead. He claimed that his actions were not intentional. Due to the incident, he is currently facing two misdemeanor charges for illegally killing wildlife.

While a misdemeanor case might not involve a lengthy jail sentence, the person could still receive serious penalties. A criminal defense attorney might be able to seek alternative sentencing instead of fines or harsher sanctions when someone commits a crime involving animals.
