Driver in custody for alleged DUI after four-car crash

On Behalf of | Dec 19, 2013 | Felonies

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a four-car accident caused a stretch of Interstate 270 in Bridgeton to be shut down for several hours on the night of Dec. 17. A Ford Explorer was struck by a Grand Prix that had lost control and veered into the Explorer’s lane a little before 11:45 p.m.

The Explorer rolled over as a result of the impact. A Mercedes rear-ended a different Grand Prix as it slowed down to avoid the accident. The driver of the Grand Prix that struck the Explorer was taken into custody on suspicion of felony assault and drunk driving. Authorities will bring the case to the prosecutor on Dec. 18.

Two drivers, from the Mercedes and Explorer, suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Accident reconstruction crews investigated the scene overnight, causing the closure of eastbound I-270 for more than four hours.

Each DUI case is unique, which means that a solid defense strategy should be crafted to suit the circumstances surrounding a DUI charge. A dedicated Missouri criminal defense attorney may review a defendant’s case carefully in order to recommend a strategy.

Some defendants choose to avoid a trial by accepting a plea deal. In that case, the attorney may broker the deal with the prosecution on the defendant’s behalf. If the charges seem excessive compared with the incident, or were given in error, there may be cause to fight the case in court. For example, a fatigued, distracted, or diabetic driver may weave in a traffic lane and appear intoxicated on the road. In addition, some breath or blood testing equipment may give an inaccurate reading due to heartburn, diabetes or other health condition.
