Saturation patrol nets 20 suspected of drunken driving

Missouri readers might be interested in the following story of a special enforcement operation that took twenty people into custody. The police conducted a special enforcement operation in two towns, Independence and Gladstone, over the course of one weekend.

In the town of Independence, police began with a saturation patrol that ran from 10 p.m. Friday, June 14 until 3 a.m. Saturday, June 15. The patrol specifically targeted suspected drunken drivers. In addition, they ran a checkpoint from 1 to 2:30 a.m. on the same Saturday. Police took six people into custody on suspicion of driving drunk. Along with the six DUI arrests, police wrote out several violations including 14 hazardous moving violations, 22 miscellaneous charges and 10 arrests on outstanding warrants plus four other arrests.

In the town of Gladstone, city police worked with the Missouri State Highway Patrol to conduct a checkpoint from 11 p.m. Saturday, June 15 to 4 a.m. Sunday, June 16. In total, 676 cars were stopped, and 14 people were taken into custody on suspicion of drunken driving. Three additional people were taken into custody on misdemeanor drug charges.

As a result of this special enforcement operation, 20 people are now facing DUI charges. A conviction for DUI comes with several negative consequences. The severity of the consequences may depend on several factors including whether a person has prior DUI convictions and the person's blood alcohol level. If a person wishes to fight DUI charges, he or she may want to find an experienced criminal defense attorney. A skilled attorney may be able to present a compelling argument to have the charges dropped or reduced. If the person is convicted, an attorney might be able to negotiate for a shorter sentence.
